An exhibition design celebrating the life and work of one of South Africa's most celebrated architects and designers, Gabriël (Gawie) Fagan. Challenge: designing and making an exhibition about 68 years of architectural work and then some, in six weeks with only resources even less. But its rare – all of it, the work, the chance, the double carriage way of time and no-time and the material legacy of a life’s work – photographs, letters, models, city-blocks and many, many drawings.
We decided to make an exhibition. Drawing, writing, laying out, editing, translating, scanning, driving, talking, arguing, listening, filming, whatsapping and painting. It’s not that often that work happens like this – so it was worth it. To have (and participate in the making of) access to the work and workings of a designer of Gawie’s calibre was a privilege in and of itself.
